Terminal Server Maintenance
These instructions explain how to perform software install and other maintenance on the terminal servers (Server-TM1 and Server-TM2).
- Log into Server-TMG as domain Administrator.
-
Open Server Manager, wait until it fully loads, and navigate to Remote Desktop Services > Collections > BRP Terminal Server.

-
The right section of the Server Manager window shows a list of all users that are currently connected to the terminal server. Right-clicking on a user will give a few options, depending on the Session State of the user.

-
In the list of terminal servers, Server-TM1 and Server-TM2 can be set to allow or disallow new connections, depending on its current state.

- Chose which server to perform maintenance on first. In this example, we are doing Server-TM1. Log into Server-TM1 as domain Administrator using Remote Desktop.
- In Server Manager on Server-TMG, change right-click on Server-TM1 and set it to not allow new connections. This had already been done in the screenshot above (section 2. b.)
-
Contact all the users that are currently logged into the Server-TM1 and ask them to fully sign out of their session and log back in. They will now be logged into Server-TM2 because Server-TM1 does not allow new connections.
- For unresponsive users, this step can be performed via the Server Manager in the connections list, but be aware that the user will lose any unsaved work they might have open.
- Make sure to let the user know that they can log back into their Virtual Desktop environment as soon as they have fully signed out. Some users don’t seem to understand this, and wait for another signal to “allow them” to go back to work. The purpose is to get all of the users’ Virtual Desktop to run on the server that isn’t being maintained.
- Click the refresh button in Server Manager to refresh the list of connections. Verify that only the Administrator (you) is connected to Server-TM1.
-
If installing or uninstalling applications, the server mode needs to be changed. Open up CMD as administrator. Use the following commands to check or change the server install status/mode:
-
To check the current server status:
change user /query
-
To enable install mode:
change user /install
-
To enable execute mode (normal operating state):
change user /execute
- Be sure to enable install mode (7. b.) and perform all install/uninstall maintenance as planned.
- Enable execute mode (7. c.) and log out of Server-TM1.
- Go back to Server Manager on Server-TMG and change Server-TM1 to allow new connections.
- Repeat steps 3 through 10 for Server-TM2.
